The 5 Points of Calvinism
Many do not realize that the widely popular belief of once saved, always saved comes from a man who I believe was a heretic and false teacher in church history, John Calvin. We read part of his Institutes of Theology in college, and the beliefs of this man greatly irked me. For one I did not understand why he would need such a huge book to convince us of his points. If they were the truth they should be obvious from scripture. Here are the five points of calvinism: total depravity of man, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace, and perseverance of the saints. I agree with his first point, that all people R slaves to sin before Christ. But the other four are completely false and very dangerous beliefs. Unconditional election, means that God arbitrarily saved some and not others, but then how could God be just in sending some to hell if they were merely destined there because he did not pick them? Also 2 peter 3:9 says "the Lord is...not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." He loved the whole world, not just the elect. It would be arrogant to say that. His third point, limited atonement, means that Christ died just for the elect, but no, "God so loved the world that he sent..." He loves everyone. Lastly the perseverance of the saints. This means once u R saved u will never fall away. But why then R there so many verses about falling away? Jesus said "in the last days many will fall away." It Is possible for Christians to fall, to loose their salvation, to walk away from Christ and the truth. God will NEVER walk away from us, but we can walk away from him and go back into the kingdom of darkness and loose the Holy Spirit if we choose to. It is possible. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Amen.
