Relativism vs. Absolute Truth

I heard a great sermon this morning on the topic of relativism and absolute truth.  The pastor made some very good points.

He noted that moral law can either come from an outside source or from within ourselves.

The problem in our modern culture is that whatever we think feels right we say is right.  But is that the truth about what is right or not?

The Bible sets out certain principles and guidelines to live by.  To ignore these is to spit in God's face essentially.  You can't take part of the Bible and not the rest of it.

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" right?  It is our road map for life.  But do we really act like it is?

The pastor was talking about the subject of homosexuality, which I haven't talked about much in my blog because I am tired myself of the Christian community harping on this subject so much.

But what does Romans 1 say about homosexuality?

Romans 1:18-32

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth [l]in unrighteousness, 19 because that which is known about God is evident [m]within them; for God made it evident to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. 21 For even though they knew God, they did not [n]honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and [o]crawling creatures.

24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [p]a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed [q]forever. Amen.

26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [r]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing [s]indecent acts and receiving in [t]their own persons the due penalty of their error.

28 And just as they did not see fit [u]to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, [v]haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them."

So homosexuality is wrong.  Romans 1 clearly states that it is.

The key here is that not only do people practice evil, but people are approving of those who do.  And not just any people any more, people in power.

Our pastor noted that recently Obama congratulated a sports player who came out and admitted that he was gay.  Also Obama recently spoke at a Planned Parenthood clinic condoning their practices, of abortion I'm guessing.

So what is right, and what is wrong?

Is murder wrong?  Yes.

Is abortion murder? Yes.

A baby's heart begins to beat at 2 weeks of age.  Therefore, any time that the baby is killed in any way after that, it is murder.  The baby is alive.  It is not just some ball of plasma.  It is a living organism.

Likewise is homosexuality wrong?  Yes.

Just as much as premarital sex is among straight people.  The sins are the same in God's eyes.   Sin is sin.

Homosexuality is not just some one's right to choose who they will love, it is sin.  Romans 1 directly points this out.

"For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [r]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing indecent acts and receiving in [t]their own persons the due penalty of their error."

Practically the due penalty is probably AIDS or other STD's.

Romans 1 paints the decline of society.  This is what the Roman empire looked like before it fell.  This is most likely what every empire looked like before it fell.

So how long will it take for America to fall?

Homosexuality is not a new topic by any means.  As far as I know, the 80's had a huge homosexual revolution where it first became popular to be gay.

Abortion has also been going on for a long time.

The difference, however, now, is that for the first time in America's history, our president is condoning and encouraging these acts, these sins, and saying they are not only ok, but that they are good.  Wrong is being called right now and right is being called wrong.

What does this say for our future?

It won't be pretty, obviously.  We are already in the process of falling, with our current economic recession that doesn't seem to be getting better.

So what does the future hold for America?  Are we going to fall like every great empire before us?

Most likely.  The question is only

when?
